What is DBSAA?

The German Embassy School Addis Ababa is among the oldest German schools in Africa. As a private school, it is governed by the German School Association in Ethiopia and financially supported by the German federal government. The German Embassy School Addis Ababa is a general education school for German-speaking students. The language of instruction is German and it is the school's objective to provide academic education meeting German educational goals and leading to German school degrees. Therefore, all educational activities at the German Embassy School Addis Ababa are based on a German curriculum. In the secondary II classes, the curriculum is based on the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO).

The school is structured in four parts: Kindergarten, Elementary School, Secondary School I and Secondary School II (IB-grades). Grade 5 functions as an “orientation phase” for the different German school types (i.e. German Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium). Even after final placement students of all levels are taught together, but facilitated and graded according to their academic level. Currently, around 180 students are enrolled at the German Embassy School. In addition, there are 85 children attending Kindergarten.

The German Embassy School distinguishes itself through its dedicated and professional teaching staff, pleasantly small class sizes, modern teaching facilities, bilingual or rather foreign language classes (English from grade 1, French as second foreign language from grade 6) and a focus on mathematics and natural sciences. The school offers a variety of extracurricular activities in the fields of sports, music (band) and drama.

The school is entitled to award graduation certificates after grade 9 (Hauptschulabschluss), grade 10 (Realschulabschluss), as well as the qualification certificate to proceed to the IB-grades or any other secondary level II in Germany. The IB·Diploma is an international higher education entrance qualification.

One part of the German Embassy School's mission is to acquaint students with the culture of the host country Ethiopia, which is achieved through several curricular and extracurricular activities. As part of this mission, the school is open to non-German citizens as well, as long as they meet the language requirements, the school is not operating at full capacity and the Ethiopian authorities don't oppose to the enrolment.

A special target group are Ethiopian families with a close relation to Germany. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Ethiopian Ministry of Education and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany from 2007 enables Ethiopian children to attend the German Embassy School under certain conditions.
